I wanted to share a few opportunities available to you guys right now who are interested in strengthening your mathematical abilities during the school year.

1) New York Math Circle (NYMC) - http://nymathcircle.org/students

High School Circle - This course includes topics in number theory, algebra, and geometry, and addresses subtle mathematical ideas, including the nature and construction of proofs. Some material will come in the form of intriguing problems from contests such as AMC 10, AMC 12 and AIME. Problem posing and problem solving are emphasized throughout.

Olympiad Level - This course develops important topics in number theory, algebra, combinatorics, and geometry, focusing on harder problems requiring sustained thought and effort. Writing of proofs will play an important role. Many problems will come from contests such as USAMO and International Math Olympiad (IMO).

2) Math-M-Addicts - http://www.pushkinacademy.com/en/pamm/

The goal of the program is to challenge the brain, make new friends, have fun, and learn mathematics in the process. Most of the learning will be done by solving interesting problems in a collaborative atmosphere. There are three groups:

Group S is aimed at 7th graders through 9th graders. Comfort with algebra is strongly suggested; topics will include number theory, polynomials, factoring, geometry, etc. Students who are relatively new to math contests should be in this group.

Group I is aimed at 8th graders through 12th graders. Comfort with a broad spectrum of mathematical topics, such as the pigeonhole principle, mathematical induction, geometry, number theory, algebra, etc. is strongly suggested. Students who are on their schools’ math teams should be in this group (unless they qualify for Group A and choose Group A instead).

Group A is aimed at students who expect to qualify for the USAMO. There will be a test given, and invitations will be made based on the results of the test.

I’m proud of how you all performed. You practiced hard and put yourselves in a position to meet your goals. Did I get a haircut? No, but you proved that in ANY given year, New York City is a force to be reckoned with!!!

We now have dates for 2010!!! HMMT will be held on February 20th. ARML will be held June 4th and 5th. NYSML will be held in Albany on April 10th…maybe. New York City will also participate in the NYSML local competition in November and February. It will be held at Stuyvesant High School. More info will follow.

Have a great start to an amazing year!!!

Here are the NYSML teams. NYSML will be held on April 25th at John Jay Senior High School in Hopewell Junction, NY (about an hour north of the city). We will be leaving early that morning.

There is a practice scheduled for THIS SATURDAY, APRIL 4TH, at Stuyvesant High School at 10 AM. Yes, that’s this saturday. You need to email me at jcocoros@stuy.edu to tell me your availability for NYSML and your availability for the practice. I understand that NYSML is the same weekend as Harvard’s admitted students’ weekend, so I understand if you ultimately cannot go. I only ask that you tell me ASAP.

I will send out the parent consent and medical forms when I get your email.

You should have received an email regarding the nomination for students to go to NYSML and ARML. The NYSML teams will be broken down by borough this year with Queens vs Brooklyn vs Manhattan/Staten Island/Bronx by where the student lives. This should make for an exciting NYSML.
You can email me at jcocoros@stuy.edu.
